Plasma Renin Activity and Serum Aldosterone Level in Congestive Heart Failure

Abstract
To evaluate the role of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in congestive heart failure, plasma renin activity and serum aldosterone level were measured by radioimmunoassay in 36 cases of congestive heart failure and 14 cases of normal subjects.
Plasma renin activity and serum aldosterone level were 4.25¡¾1.93 ng/ml/hr, 198. 90¡¾87.97 pg/ml respectively in congestive heart failure which were significantly higher than those of normal control group. (0.87¡¾0.37ng/ml/hr, 47.14¡¾ 22.42pg/ml respectively)
Neither plasma renin activity nor serum aldosterone level had close correlation to the serum concentration of sodium or potassium. Plasma renin activity had negative correlation with cardiac index calculated from M-mode echocardiogram but serum aldosterone level had not.
